florescativas-deactivated202010 asked: I think it's a serious problem that manga influenced styles are not respect in "serious" circles but I'm sorta... itchy... on this subject, because I see many young kids that want to learn manga and refrain from studying the minimal amount of realism. And like... to stylize something properly you need to know how it works first. I can always tell when someone learned to draw from manga and manga only and when someone ACTUALLY learnt how to draw.

That’s their own issue. Anyone who only wants to look at Death Note– or only paint directly from photos, or only try to pitch a cartoon that looks like a weak Regular Show reskin–  isn’t necessarily going to get “far,” but that’s fine, as long as they’re happy. Unless you’re their teacher, or they specifically asked you for advice, it’s not your business.

It’s cool to say “OK, it’s great you read manga, now look at other things” but incredibly awful to spend time and energy trying to condemn a massive range media with a rich history and an incredibly broad scope of style and subject matter simply because it’s from Japan. Which is something a great many people who think they know what they’re talking about wrt: Art attempt with alarming regularity.

similarly idiotic: people who treat Studio Ghibli as the only “acceptable” source of anime
