In regards of the recent election results, I feel like this preformance and this specific character need to be talked about.
Leo De La Iglesia, the skater who represents America, is a a Mexican-American man. The man who represents America during the most important skating competitions in the show is someone who has been discriminated by the recently elected American president himself.
Leo is skating to the song “Still Alive”, which is obviously a song about how despite all the harships in life, it’s imporant to always have something to hold onto that keeps you positive, in order to stay alive during the difficult times.
The fact that a Mexican-American man skates to a song like this, on the day that it was revealed that a man who has been nothing but discriminating, and an utter racist, against Mexicans has been elected as the new president of America, is so heartwearming. And I almost feel as if this is a sign, and a way of the series to show that no matter where you are from, and no matter what your ethnicity/nationality is, and no matter how much you are being discriminated against, even by your own president, your dreams are valid and you are capable of doing increddible things. It’s almost as if the scene where Leo skated to this song, was a message to all the Mexican Americans to hold on to their hopes, to stay alive and to always stay strong, no matter what.
This is so important.
